Vienna. There was no sensation in Vienna’s Toto-Cup - but it was a memorable game nonetheless. SC Maccabi Vienna played Vienna (Vienna First Football Club) at the Gruabn of the WAF in Vienna’s Brigittenau district for the advancement to the fifth round of the Vienna Toto-Cup.
The favorite from the Döbling district did win 2:1, the goals for Vienna were scored by Floris Van Zaanen (19.) and Patricio Parees Saez (35.); in the interim Merlin Zöller had equalized the game (19.). But Maccabi could score a success by keeping the game leveled at times, attracting 450 spectators, and catch attention.
After all, this was about more than just soccer: with the first game of Vienna’s only Jewish soccer club against Austria’s oldest club, fans of both sides wanted to highlight the Jewish identity, sharpen historical memory, and thus make a contribution to the Commemorative Year 2018.
