The Vienna Philharmonic are commemorating their members who have been murdered, persecuted, or expelled in the Shoah and during national socialism. Seventeen commemorative stones were made to be laid in front of the members’ last known residences.

The commemorative plaques were presented to the members of the orchestra for the first time at the Vienna Musikverein on Thursday. “The stones are places of commemoration, giving victims back the dignity that was once denied to them and urge future generations to be vigilant,” said the head of the Philharmonic, Daniel Froschauer, in a release.

180th Anniversary of the orchestra in March

“Every stone tells the life story of a musician who was stigmatized based on racist and ideological grounds although he was one of us,” Froschauer was cited. The project was realized on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of the orchestra’s founding on March 28. It was supported by historian Oliver Rathkolb and the association Stones of Remembrance.
